FAQ

What does a nutrition coaching session entail?

Before our first session, you will complete a few intake forms in order to get more information on your background, current habits, and goals. The initial 60-minute consult will include a more thorough nutrition assessment as we begin getting to know one another (nutrition coaching is a process and takes time!). If appropriate, we may begin to set some small, manageable steps to work on until the next appointment. In the follow-up sessions, we will continue to assess and discuss how things went - what went well, what didn’t go well, what changes you would like to make, etc. I will answer any questions that came up in the process, strategize with you to make your goals manageable and realistic, and support you in your change process.

Which nutrition coaching option should I choose?

I provide monthly nutrition coaching packages or pay-per-session options. This allows for the length of time we work together to be dependent on the individual's needs. If you feel you fall into both the categories of sports nutrition and women's wellness, and are not sure which one to select, that is okay! All sessions are customized to the client's needs and if you choose sports nutrition coaching, for example, we can still talk about women's wellness issues during sessions if you wish. In general, women's wellness clients work with me for a minimum of 6 months.

Where do we meet for our sessions?

I am located in Nashville, TN. However, you do not need to live in the Nashville area as I am seeing all clients virtually via phone or Zoom video chat.

Do you provide a meal plan?

I have found most clients have more success when we focus on small, specific changes. Sometimes a meal plan can feel overwhelming to someone even if it is customized to their habits and food preferences. For clients with a specific goal such as an athlete who is needing to gain 5 lbs. of lean mass in a specific amount of time, I will provide a meal plan. The way I do meal plans is based on macronutrients (carbs, protein, fats) and focuses more on servings of each food group needed per day. This allows the client to choose foods from each food group that they like or have on hand, rather than me suggesting specific foods that may not be available to them.

Do you promote a certain type of “diet” such as Paleo, Keto, etc.?

The short answer is no. The long answer is I believe that all foods can fit into a healthy, balanced way of eating. Any “diet” whether promoted as a diet or not, if it involves strict guidelines or food rules, will likely not be sustainable long-term. I do not believe there is any one food or food group that is bad for us or that is causing all our health problems. I help clients to understand what the food groups are, what foods are in each food group, what appropriate portion sizes look like, what those foods are doing for us, what nutrients they provide, etc. If you are interested in trying a certain type of diet, or you are already following a diet such as plant-based or gluten-free, I can help you do so safely and realistically as long as there are no medical reasons that diet is not appropriate for you.

Do you provide other services such as grocery shopping lists, recipes, etc.?

Yes! All sessions are tailored to the individual needs of a client. I like to tell clients I am a toolbox and we will work together to assess which tools will be most helpful for you. If you feel overwhelmed by grocery shopping, I am happy to accompany you to strategize with you and/or provide grocery shopping lists. If you are looking for quick, easy, and balanced recipes, I have many tried-and-true recipes I can provide for you to try based on your food preferences. Our sessions together are for you and we will work together to collaboratively make the best plan of action for your lifestyle, schedule, preferences, and goals.

Do you take insurance?

Jill Merkel RD Nutrition does not accept insurance or file insurance claims. If you would like to submit a request for reimbursement from your insurance company, an itemized Superbill (receipt) will be provided to you upon request. Filing insurance claims and seeking insurance reimbursement for services provided is entirely up to the client for whom services were provided. Full payment is required in advance of all appointments. Your scheduled appointment time is not confirmed until payment has been received.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, if you are unable to pay the full amount up front, we can work together to set up a payment plan that works for you.

I am ready to get started. What should I do next?

Great! If you are ready to start working together, you can submit a no-obligation inquiry for the Sports Nutrition Package or the Women's Wellness Package.  Once you submit an inquiry, I will send you an email with more information and a link to schedule a free 15-minute call if you have additional questions.
